Education for sustainable consumption and lifestyle change - educational goals and outcomes
Main Article Content
Abstract
The article reviews the theoretical knowledge in the field sustainable consumption oriented education that is focused on the development of relevant habits and behaviour, and consequently on the overall lifestyle change. It emphasizes the importance of transformative learning as a basic framework for this type of learning, looks for related concepts that will help to set relevant educational goals – such as active approach, action competencies, key competencies for sustainability. The authors also discuss how these goals could be achieved in school teaching: for the sensitive nature of transformative learning and its potential impact on personality of the individual, they suggest innovative tools e.g., future learning practices, creative learning, conflict resolution methods and the whole institutional approach. They recapitulate and generalize the experience with the design of a responsible consumption program for children / pupils / students for kindergarten to secondary school attendees and draw conclusions for the use of the concept of transformative learning in the education of children (as compared with adult learning). The result of theoretical considerations and joint activities in practice is the design of an evaluation tool, which can be used to reflect on the progress in meeting educational goals in the field – competencies for responsible consumption and lifestyle change.
